Guapa, no? y además inteligente y talentosa!

First review of the year in AURAL INNOVATIONS ISSUE 38

Priscilla Hernandez - "Ancient Shadows" (Yidneth 2006, CD) From Aural Innovations #38 (January 2008)

Ancient Shadows is the debut CD from Barcelona, Spain based Priscilla Hernandez. The album has won a number of awards in New Age categories, though Priscilla notes that much of the interest in her music has been in Goth circles and media press references downtempo music. Listening to the CD it's evident why there would be that diversity of interest and descriptions. The music is an intriguing blend of New Age and Goth, with the kind of beats not typically heard in either of those genres. Imagine the Celtic tinged New Age of Enya and Clannad with a dark but uplifting Gothic atmosphere, add a touch of symphonic progressive rock, toss in some odd metered grooves, and you'll get something like the music on Ancient Shadows. The CD also comes with thick booklets containing detailed information about Priscilla, individual song commentary, lyrics, and beautiful fantasy artwork by Priscilla. I strongly encourage you to visit her web site and click the Art link to see numerous samples of her work (the Yidneth Project comic especially caught my interest). The themes are fantasy and fairy (she will appear at the Faericon in Philadelphia, October 2008), which will appeal to New Age and Prog fans alike. Don't let the New Age references scare you away. There's much more going on here than mere New Age meditational fluff. Lovers of accessible fantasy themed Progressive Rock will find much to enjoy on Ancient Shadows. Review of ANCIENT SHADOWS by MICK MERCER (magazine THE MICK)

Reviewed by MICK MERCER well known journalist and author of gothic reviews, and creator of the magazine THE MICK

"It's a work of art, from start to finish, from cover to cover"
PRISCILLA HERNÁNDEZ ANCIENT SHADOWS The Ghost And The Fairy Yidneth It's that age old story of molecular biologist turned fantasy illustrator meeting sympathetic musicians and creates shifting gothic-New Age tableaux worthy of International Merit. A story of passion, where dark commercial overlords are banished, heralding a crusade of independent action. It comes in a lavish gatefold digipack, with two booklets, both illustrated, with full lyrics ands explanations of the actual songs, including a password to receive exclusive online content, which is always a joyful bonus. The atmospheric intro 'Facing The Dream' with its hectic birdcall leads swiftly into the balmy, aching 'Away' where the collision between youth and adult expectations crest a commercial grace that's on the pop side of ethereal, and quite mesmerising. 'Ancient Shadow' rolls along inquisitively, like a sturdy Kate Bush offshoot and 'I Steal The Leaves' exists in that same vacuum of idealised sentiments and New Age stylings...
Where the boundaries are between the New Age world and Færy landscape I know not. The Ethereal world is lit clearly enough with deep artistic undercurrents acting as a moat to protect its quality without the lighter scenes dissolving it too much, but someone like Priscilla can somehow combine the dewy Celtic sound of 'The Willow's Lullaby' with a creepier feel to 'The Call Of The Nymph' that reminds me of the 'Merlin' tv adaptation, and so the fantasy and historical merge, and Ethereal comes tinged with haunting pipes and benign commercial rhythms. Just as Clannad once achieved. It's very attractive. 'Nothing' is interesting, being close to alt-indie singer-songwriter fare, except that it deals with the isolation of a ghost watching people rejoicing/emotion, and wishing to experience that again itself. 'Haunted' would appeal to any fans of Ego Likeness with its lighter dancey trails and dark, rich vocals. The scurrying, excitable 'Nightmare' is murkier material with a dark tension, 'Fairytale' a mere snapshot. 'The Realms Of Twilight' is another gorgeous floater of a song, with thrilling soft vocals and shuffling washes of sound given a poppy openness, and the gentle, heartfelt 'Lament' is even more beautifully expressed and touching in its mild expanses. 'Ahora Que Te Has Ido' is a short, elegant instrumental, followed by an equally brief but transporting 'The Prince And The Fairy' and the gracious, expressive 'I'm Right Here' with some exquisite piano. If the album has a fault it's that too many songs fall into emotional easy listening, but that's what she has set as the overall mood and you're soon enveloped by it, but things change with 'Sueño Muerto' being in a different language, with lush tones, and then the strings and tantalising otherworldliness of 'Facing The Dream' closes with some barren, eerie ecclesiastical swirls. It's a work of art, from start to finish, from cover to cover.

    Priscilla Hernandz- Ancient Shadows

One of the most professional-sounding independent releases you'll hear all year, Priscilla Hernandez's album stacks up favorably with such ethereal pop acts as October Project and Clannad. If anything, it's almost too professional; ethereal fans that tend toward more experimental or primitive stuff like Lycia and Corvus Corax might be a bit put off by Hernandez's rich synthesizer arrangements and full, trilling vocals, not to mention the wailing rock guitar of "Nightmare." On the other hand, "Lament" is perfect, a subtle mix of cello, piano, and richly layered vocal harmonies set off by a softly exotic rhythm reminiscent of Loreena McKennitt's Mediterranean-inspired work. "The Call of the Nymph" is more Medieval with its harps and cellos, though electronic keyboards set it apart from the stricter stuff of historical purists, while delicate pianos on "Fairy Tale" hint at classical influences. "Sueño Muerto" stands out as one of the album's highlights, with the Barcelona resident singing in her native language over soft ambient tones, and "I Steal the Leaves" evokes a natural mysticism with its airy flutes, plinking harp, and invocation of the seasons. In addition to her work as a singer and songwriter, Hernandez is also a fantasy illustrator, and the album is filled with her darkly romantic illustrations, which call to mind a more feminine Michael Parks with their images of gothic fairies and raven-winged angels and which perfectly capture the mood of her music. Pick this up if you're a fan of melodic ethereal stuff like Louisa John-Krol and Enya.

    - PRISCILLA HERNANDEZ / ANCIENT SHADOWS -

Reseña de Ancient Shadows in INANNANAKED

    ESTILO MUSICAL:Gótico/Etérea
    ADJETIVOS Bella, oscura, melancólica
VALORACIÓN (Muy) Buena música y sonido personal
    SONIDO Profesional

Review of debut album “Ancient Shadows” by Priscilla Hernandez

Emerging like Venus from the Canary Islands of Spain is a bewitching siren, Priscilla Hernandez, who draws, paints and writes as well as she sings. Her debut album, “Ancient Shadows”, boldly consists of two parts – “The Ghost” and “The Fairy” - corresponding with dark and light aspects of the supernatural, each side accompanied by its own sumptuous booklet of lyrics and illustrations. Crossing ethereal gothic with new-age, from the first ghostly sighs Priscilla’s silken voice and deft brushstrokes sashay gracefully between ghostly willows, wailing waifs and spectral spellbinding. Priscilla is also a performer, blessed with resemblance to the enchantress portrayed in #16 “The Prince and the Fairy”: he saw a maiden golden as the summer, it was not a trick of the light filtering through the dome of the wood. Too late he realized he was under a spell… I’m guessing that thousands of princes will be trampling through that forest pretty soon, if not already! But make no mistake, this is no ephemeral flotsam; she’s an ardent, determined woman who turned down many label offers to remain true to her vision, which is consistent, confidently defined and compelling. Instruments include flute, cello, guitar (electric & acoustic), keyboard and percussion, played by a talented troupe of musicians.

The following comparisons by the reviewer and are not comprehensive; listeners will naturally form their own connections within this ever expanding genre:

Exerpt: Priscilla Hernández' debut album is a treasure trove for adventurous music fans. She's singing and writing everything herself. The result is steeped in myth and legend and features stunning songs. The record comes in a beautifully designed package befitting the immaculate contents and is illustrated by Hernández herself. The title song has a haunting mood and a gorgeous vocal. "I Steal the Leaves" is a standout and evokes comparisons to Loreena McKennitt with its multi-layered sound. "The Willow's Lullaby" is darker and almost frightening, Hernández soft voice atop eerie whispers and atmospheric backing. The album's dual nature almost gothic works juxtaposed with New age sweetness works well. This is a masterpiece.
